WHEN CAN I WEAR MY “FANCY” JEWELRY?
As I get a little “older”, I find myself really wanting to wear and use my “FANCY” jewelry. I come from a long line of jewelers in my family (my great grandfather started the business) – so as you can imagine, over the years I have received (and acquired) some jewelry that I would consider “fancy”. My Dad always says “You should use and enjoy your diamonds, not have them sitting in a drawer.”
Recently, my daughter turned ten years old. She was given a beautiful pearl necklace (that she loves) as a birthday gift. The day after her birthday, she came running down the stairs and was wearing this pearl necklace with a t-shirt and sweatpants. She was so proud and excited. But, I just couldn’t let her wear this “fancy” necklace with a pair of sweatpants. It looked ridiculous (forget that she is ten and not wearing pearls to elementary school). But, when I told my Dad this story, again, he told me “Who cares? Let her enjoy them!” I cringed at the thought of letting a small girl wear pearls to school- would this be socially acceptable? Would she loose them? Would they break? There were too many reasons that made me worry.
But, I’ve recently started taking my Dad’s advice to heart (I bet he wishes I would have said this a long time ago). I (personally) have been wearing those larger diamonds with my jeans. And, I’m showing off my jewels instead of letting them collect dust waiting for that next wedding or baby shower. Guess What?? I’m loving it! As an adult, I think all those reasons that made me worry for my daughter really weren’t a concern for myself. So, why not wear them? What was holding me back?
I still haven’t allowed my daughter to wear her pearls to school. But, I am definitely enjoying mine! So my suggestion for you…. wear your jewels. Show them off and enjoy them! And, there will come a time when I will say the same for my daughter (maybe just not quite yet).
